Dr Roelofse specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide spectrum of conditions, but has a special interest in rheumatological conditions, HIV disease and Intensive Care Medicine.
He has a weekly theatre list on Thursdays at Melomed Bellville where he performs gastroscopies, colonoscopies, bronchoscopes and liver biopsies under conscious sedation performed by the world-renowned expert Dr James Roelofse.
The practice also employs an experienced clinical technologist to perform echocardiograms. An echocardiogram, often referred to in the medical community as a ‘cardiac echo’ or simply an ‘echo’, is a sonogram of the heart, also known as a ‘cardiac ultrasound’. It uses standard ultrasound techniques to image two-dimensional slices of the heart. The latest ultrasound systems now employ 3D real-time imaging on in and out patients.
Internists are qualified physicians with postgraduate training in internal medicine and should not be confused with ‘interns’, who are doctors in their first year of residency training. Although internists may act as primary care physicians, they are not ‘family physicians’, ‘family practitioners’, or ‘general practitioners’, whose training is not solely concentrated on adults and may include surgery, obstetrics, and paediatrics.
